Navigating the till interface — product categories, PLU keys, function keys and supervisor override functions. Scanning barcodes with the scanner gun and handheld, entering PLU codes manually for unbarred items, keying in weighted produce items and verifying price on screen against shelf ticket
- Day 3 — Cash Float & Opening Procedures: Counting the opening cash float accurately — identifying and counting all denominations (R200, R100, R50, R20, R10, R5, R2, R1 coins, 50c, 20c, 10c). Recording float count on float accountability sheet, signing and accepting float responsibility from supervisor. Calculating the correct change using the POS system and independently by mental arithmetic. Handling items with no barcode, damaged labels, and items that beep as security-tagged. End-of-day till float count and cash-up practice

Processing paper and digital coupon vouchers. Activating and processing gift card transactions. Processing customer returns — verifying proof of purchase (receipt, bank statement), inspecting returned item condition, selecting the return method (refund to card, refund to cash, exchange, credit note), completing the return on POS and getting supervisor sign-off
- Day 8 — Customer Service Excellence & Complaint Handling: Professional opening greeting, maintaining eye contact and a friendly demeanour through the transaction. Packing bags correctly — heavy items at the bottom, fragile items on top, keeping cold items together. Speed vs accuracy balance during busy periods. Handling impatient customers and long queues professionally. Responding to price queries at the till — price check procedures. De-escalating an angry customer, knowing when to call a supervisor, and handover script. Consumer Protection Act — customer's right to a receipt, right of return, price accuracy obligations
- Day 9 — Loss Prevention, Till Security & Compliance: Understanding retail shrinkage — what it is, how it happens, and the cashier's role in preventing it. Identifying and refusing to process price-switched items. Understanding sweethearting and till-tapping and why they are criminal offences. Correct procedure for voiding an item or transaction — supervisor authorisation requirement. Handling counterfeit notes — checking security features (watermark, security thread, raised print) and refusing. Age-restricted sales — liquor and tobacco verification of ID, refusal script and supervisor call. Cashier accountability — what the cashier is personally responsible for on their float at end of shift
- Day 10 — Till Balancing, Reconciliation & Final Assessment: Full end-of-shift close-out procedure — closing the POS session, removing the till drawer, counting cash by denomination, separating float from takings. Completing the till balance sheet — recording actual cash count, comparing against POS Z-read totals, calculating any over or under, completing the variance explanation section. Handing over to supervisor and obtaining signed acknowledgement. Full competency assessment — practical till operating session assessed by a qualified assessor, covering scanning, all payment types, a return, customer interaction, cash count and till balance sheet.
