5-Day Training Structure — Theory + Practical
Our tower crane training is carefully structured to build knowledge before operation. Days 1–2 give you the theoretical foundation. Days 3–5 put that knowledge into practice on real tower cranes with hands-on supervised operation until you demonstrate full competency.
Day 1 & 2 — Theory Programme
What You Learn in Theory (Days 1 & 2)
- Occupational Health & Safety (OHS Act): Legislation governing tower crane operation in South Africa — operator responsibilities, legal obligations, and site safety compliance requirements
- Crane components & systems: In-depth identification and function of all major tower crane components — chassis, tower, jib, counter jib, hoist, slew systems, trolley, hook block, brakes and transmission
- Load charts & lift planning: Reading and applying manufacturer's load charts, radius vs capacity relationships, calculating safe working loads, and planning lifts before execution
- Pre-operational inspection: Systematic daily inspection checklist covering all mechanical, structural, electrical and safety systems — exactly as required by SAQA 116255
- Hand signals & communication: Standardised rigger-to-operator signals (SANS 10294), radio communication protocols, and site communication chains during lift operations
- Weather and site conditions: Wind speed limits, weather monitoring, operating in restricted airspace, and procedures for securing the crane in adverse conditions
- Emergency procedures: Power failure protocols, emergency lowering, load drop prevention, fire response, and evacuation from cab-height positions
- Theory assessment: Written examination at end of Day 2 — 20% weighting in final competency determination

- Basic load movement exercises: Controlled hoisting, lowering, slewing and trolley movement with instructor-guided loads in a safe training environment
- Load placement precision tasks: Accurate placement of loads onto defined targets simulating real construction site placement operations
- Combined movement operations: Simultaneous use of hoist, slew, and trolley controls for multi-axis load movement
- Tandem and restricted-area lifts: Lifting in simulated tight site conditions with nearby structures — awareness of swing radius, counterweight clearance, and slew limit management
- Practical competency assessment (Day 5): Assessed practical tasks performed independently before the assessor — 80% weighting. Competent or Not Yet Competent per SAQA 116255 criteria
