This short, accredited first aid training course in South Africa covers basic life support, CPR, choking response, bleeding control, and more. Whether you're a workplace employee, school staff, safety officer, or community member, this course will prepare you to manage medical emergencies and potentially save lives.

Delivered by qualified instructors, our training is aligned with Unit Standard 119567, recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), and meets Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) compliance requirements. Upon completion, you’ll receive a nationally recognized First Aid Level 1 certificate valid for 2 years.

Purpose Of the Unit Standard:

This unit standard is for persons required to assess the emergency situation and providing basic Life Support and basic First Aid in order to stabilize patients prior to transfer to the emergency services.

  1. Emergency Scene Management

This module teaches how to assess and manage an emergency scene safely and effectively. It includes:

  • Ensuring personal and bystander safety
  • Calling for help or emergency services
  • Prioritizing care (triage)
  • Keeping the environment safe for the victim
  • Using protective equipment (e.g., gloves, mask)
The aim is to stabilize the situation before advanced medical help arrives.

  1. Basic Anatomy and Physiology

Participants learn the fundamental structure and function of the human body, with a focus on:

  • Major systems (respiratory, circulatory, nervous, etc.)
  • How organs function in emergencies
  • Understanding vital signs (pulse, breathing)
This knowledge helps in understanding how injuries affect the body and how to respond accordingly.

  1. Safety, Airway, Breathing and Circulation (SABC)

SABC is a step-by-step emergency protocol used to assess and assist victims:

  • Safety: Ensure the area is safe for you and the victim.
  • Airway: Check and open the airway to allow breathing.
  • Breathing: Assess if the person is breathing; give rescue breaths if necessary.
  • Circulation: Check for signs of circulation (pulse, bleeding); perform CPR if needed.
This is the foundation for saving lives in critical situations.

  1. Choking

This section covers how to recognize and respond to choking:

  • Difference between mild and severe obstruction
  • Back blows and abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver)
  • Special procedures for infants, children, and pregnant women
  • When to call for emergency help
It emphasizes quick response to prevent suffocation.

Basic First Aid Training

  1. Bleeding and Wounds

Learners are taught how to:

  • Identify different types of bleeding (arterial, venous, capillary)
  • Control bleeding using direct pressure, elevation, and bandaging
  • Clean and dress wounds to prevent infection
  • Recognize signs of infection or complications
This is crucial for preventing blood loss and infection.

  1. Breaks (Fractures)

This topic deals with:

  • Recognizing signs and symptoms of bone fractures (swelling, deformity, pain)
  • Immobilizing the affected area using splints
  • Preventing further injury while waiting for medical help
  • Managing associated injuries (e.g., bleeding)
It focuses on preventing complications from bone injuries.

  1. Burns

Participants learn to manage different types and degrees of burns:

  • First-degree (superficial), second-degree (partial thickness), and third-degree (full thickness) burns
  • Cooling the burn with water
  • Avoiding use of ointments, ice, or breaking blisters
  • Covering the burn with a sterile dressing
  • When to refer for emergency treatment
This module helps minimize tissue damage and infection.

  1. Shock, Unconsciousness and Fainting

This section explains:

  • Causes of shock (e.g., blood loss, trauma, allergic reaction)
  • Signs (cold skin, weak pulse, confusion)
  • Proper positioning and reassurance of the patient
  • Managing unconsciousness and fainting safely
  • Monitoring vital signs until help arrives
It teaches how to support the body’s systems during collapse.

  1. Patient Recovery

Learners are trained in:

  • The Recovery Position (placing the patient on their side to maintain an open airway)
  • Monitoring breathing and consciousness levels
  • Keeping the patient warm and calm
  • Ensuring continuous care until professionals take over
This prevents choking and ensures airway protection in unconscious patients.

  1. Practical Examination

Participants must demonstrate their practical skills in a simulated emergency scenario:

  • CPR
  • Choking response
  • Bandaging and wound care
  • Treating burns, fractures, or shock
This exam evaluates the hands-on competency of the learner.

  1. Conclusion

This final segment reviews all course topics and allows:

  • Questions and answers
  • Final guidance on using first aid skills in real-life situations
  • Certification details and validity
It ensures learners leave confident, competent, and prepared to assist in emergencies.
