Drill Rig Training
Get QCTO-certified with 5-day drill rig training at Real Skills. R7,000 includes theory, practical on real rigs, free accommodation & job assistance.
South Africa's mining, water well, and civil construction sectors are in constant need of skilled, certified drill rig operators. At Real Skills Technical FET, our drill rig training equips you with the QCTO-registered Occupational Certificate, real hands-on machine hours, and a direct pathway into employment — all within a focused 5-day course for just R7,000.
Drill Rig Training — 2 Days Theory, 3 Days Practical
Our drill rig operator course is a QCTO-registered Occupational Certificate programme delivered over five consecutive working days. The first two days are classroom-based, covering safety legislation, rig systems, geological fundamentals, and operating theory. Days three through five are spent operating real drill rigs on site under direct supervision from our certified, industry-experienced instructors.
Drill rig training at Real Skills is not a simulator course. You work on actual rotary and percussion rigs from day three — the same equipment you will operate in the field. Our strict 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio guarantees maximum machine time and individualised coaching throughout the practical phase.

Why Become a Drill Rig Operator?
Certified drill rig operators are in strong demand across South Africa's mining, infrastructure, and water sectors. Here's why this qualification is a high-value career move:
Premium Earnings
Drill rig operators command above-average salaries. Entry-level rates start at R18,000–R22,000 per month. Experienced operators with blast-hole or exploration experience earn R35,000+.
Mining Boom Demand
South Africa's mining, platinum, and coal sectors are major employers of drill rig operators. The MHSC reports ongoing shortages of certified drilling personnel.
Water Well Drilling
South Africa's water scarcity drives massive government and private investment in borehole drilling — a key growth sector with year-round operator demand.
Career Ladder
Start as a rig operator, progress to driller-in-charge, then rig supervisor or exploration geologist's assistant. Your QCTO ticket opens doors at every level.
Africa & Beyond
QCTO qualifications are recognised across SADC countries. Drill rig operators find high-paying contracts throughout Africa, the Middle East, and Australia.
Civil Foundations
Construction piling, geotechnical investigation, and foundation engineering all require certified drill rig operators — expanding your employment options beyond mining.
Where Do Certified Drill Rig Operators Work?
A QCTO drill rig operator certificate opens doors across a wide range of sectors in South Africa and beyond:
Mining & Exploration
- Blast-Hole Drilling: Open-cast gold, platinum, coal, and iron ore operations — the largest employer of drill rig operators in South Africa
- Diamond Exploration: Rotary air blast (RAB) and core drilling for geological sampling programmes
- Grade Control Drilling: Infill drilling on producing mines to define ore boundaries
- Underground Drilling: Jumbo and longhole drilling in hard-rock narrow-reef operations
Water Well & Borehole Drilling
- Municipal Water Supply: Government contracts to sink boreholes for rural and peri-urban water supply programmes
- Agricultural Boreholes: Irrigation and livestock water supply across Free State, Northern Cape, and North West
- Commercial & Industrial: Backup water supply boreholes for farms, lodges, and estates
Civil & Geotechnical
- Foundation Piling: Percussion and rotary CFA piling for multi-storey buildings and bridges
- Geotechnical Investigation: Soil and rock profiling for roads, dams, and infrastructure projects
- Ground Anchoring: Rock anchors and soil nails for slope stabilisation and retaining structures
