4X4 Training School
Become a confident, certified 4x4 driver. 3-day intensive training — 1 day theory, 2 full days of hands-on off-road driving on real terrain. Covering recovery techniques, water crossings, sand, mud, and rock driving. Free accommodation available. Only R3,500. Pretoria & Bloemfontein campuses.
Whether you work in mining access, game reserve management, bush rescue, safari tourism, or simply want to master difficult terrain, a professional 4x4 driving certificate is the difference between getting through and getting stuck. At Real Skills Technical FET, our 4X4 training school delivers a nationally recognised driving certificate, real off-road terrain hours, and the practical skills to confidently operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle across sand, mud, rock, water, and steep gradients — all within a focused 3-day programme for R3,500. We welcome drivers from all nine provinces at our Pretoria and Bloemfontein campuses.
4X4 Training — 1 Day Theory, 2 Days Off-Road Practical
Our 4x4 driver training course is a professionally structured, recognised programme delivered over three consecutive days. Day 1 is classroom-based, covering 4-wheel drive systems, transfer case operation, diff lock theory, tyre pressure science, terrain reading, recovery planning, and the South African off-road code of conduct. Days 2 and 3 take you onto real, varied off-road terrain — tackling water crossings, sand tracks, mud sections, rocky descents, steep gradients, and recovery scenarios under the direct supervision of our qualified, field-experienced instructors.
This is not a classroom programme or online course. Every student drives on actual off-road terrain, operating the 4-wheel drive systems, diff locks, and recovery equipment used in real mining, safari, and field environments. With a maximum 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio on the terrain, every student receives hands-on coaching and corrective feedback throughout both practical days.
Driver's Licence Required for 4X4 Training
A valid South African driver's licence (Code 8 or Code 10) is required to enrol. Students will be operating 4x4 vehicles on designated off-road training terrain throughout Days 2 and 3. Learner drivers are not eligible. International licences are accepted — please enquire with our admissions team before booking.

Two Training Campuses — Pretoria & Bloemfontein
Real Skills delivers 4x4 driver training from two campuses, each with access to purpose-built off-road terrain. Both campuses are served by free accommodation for qualifying out-of-town students and have experienced instructors with backgrounds in mining access, game reserve management, and emergency services.
Pretoria Campus
Our flagship Gauteng campus — serving students from Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North West. The Pretoria campus off-road terrain includes water crossings, rock sections, and gradient training areas.
Bloemfontein Campus
Our Free State CBD campus — serving students from the Free State, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal. Bloemfontein terrain includes sandy sections, clay mud, and off-camber slopes.
Why Get Professionally Trained as a 4X4 Driver?
A 4x4 driving certificate is not just a recreational milestone — in South Africa's mining, conservation, tourism, and emergency sectors, it is increasingly a prerequisite for employment and advancement. Here's why formal 4x4 training matters:
Mining Access & Exploration
Junior miners, geologists, field surveyors, and exploration teams operating in remote areas are required to hold a recognised 4x4 certificate before driving on access tracks, exploration roads, and haul roads at prospecting sites across South Africa.
Game Reserves & Conservation
Field rangers, conservation officers, anti-poaching units, and eco-tourism guides working in national parks and private game reserves must be able to operate 4x4 vehicles on difficult bush terrain — a formal certificate demonstrates verified competency.
Emergency Services & Rescue
Mountain rescue teams, rural ambulance crews, disaster response units, and SAPS bush operation teams regularly require proven 4x4 driving competency as a prerequisite for off-road deployment on unpaved and flood-affected terrain.
Safari & Adventure Tourism
Safari vehicles, overland tour operators, expedition logistics companies, and adventure tourism operators across South Africa and SADC actively recruit drivers with a verified 4x4 certificate — especially for Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe routes.
Civil & Infrastructure Projects
Remote infrastructure projects — pipeline inspection, power line maintenance, dam construction, and rural road building — require field supervisors and site teams capable of operating 4x4 vehicles on unsurfaced access tracks in all weather conditions.
Safety & Confidence
The most common 4x4 incidents — rollovers, drowning in water crossings, and bogging — happen to untrained, overconfident drivers. Professional training dramatically reduces risk, giving you the decision-making framework to recognise dangerous situations before you enter them.
Where Do Certified 4X4 Drivers Work?
A professional 4x4 driving certificate opens career doors across multiple sectors. South Africa's vast rural and industrial landscape means off-road driving competency is a recurring hiring requirement:
Mining & Exploration
Remote mine access roads, exploration team vehicles, and shaft maintenance crews across platinum, gold, chrome, and coal mining regions in North West, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga.
Wildlife & Conservation
Kruger National Park, private game reserves, conservation NGOs, and anti-poaching operations across Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Northern Cape.
Safari & Tourism
Game drive operators, overland expedition companies, and adventure tourism businesses across South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.
Emergency & Rescue
Mountain rescue teams, rural EMS services, disaster management units, and SAPS bush operations teams operating in the Drakensberg, Limpopo bushveld, and rural KwaZulu-Natal.
Agriculture & Farming
Commercial farms, agricultural cooperatives, and irrigation scheme managers operating across the Highveld, Free State, and Northern Cape require 4x4-certified field supervisors and water bailiffs.
Civil & Infrastructure
Pipeline inspection, power line maintenance patrols, rural road construction, and dam safety teams operating on unsurfaced tracks across South Africa's remote provinces.
